Mark the Ascetic on those who think they are made righteous by works.

Christ is Master because of His own essence and incarnate life. For He creates man from nothing, and through His own blood redeems him when dead in sin; and to those who believe in Him He has given His grace. When Scripture says, ‘He will reward each according to what he has done’ [Matthew 16:27], don’t imagine that works in themselves merit either hell or the kingdom. No, Christ rewards everyone according to whether his works are done with faith or without faith in Him. For He is not a dealer bound by contract but our Creator and Redeemer.

Mark the Ascetic c. 425
“On those who think that they are made righteous by works”

Mark the Ascetic was a 5th century desert father, reputedly a disiciple of John Chrysostom, whose writings feature prominently in The Philokalia. Among these writings are some of the most sublime and evangelical (i.e. Gospel-oriented) insights to be found in the writings of the Fathers.
